St. Margaret’s SC Hosts Spring Fling

May 31, 2023

L to R: Sullivan Nakatsu, Ryan Anderson, Elena Oetling Ramirez, Annalise Balasubramanian, and Mattea Nakatsu

The St. Margaret’s Sailing Club hosted some 25 athletes competing in the Olympic ILCA classes from Canada, USA and Mexico for the Spring Fling Regatta May 20-21, part of Sail Canada Canadian Sailing Team (CST) and Canadian Sailing Development Squad (CSDS) Integration Camp.

Among the sailors registered, Tokyo 2020 Olympian in ILCA 6, Elena Oetling from Mexico and Lilly Myers from USA were in action, as well as Sail Canada National Sailing Team members Clara Gravely and Coralie Vittecoq. Also participating was Sail Canada Development Squad member Annalise Balasubramanian, 12th at the 2022 Youth Sailing World Championships, the best Canadian performance in ILCA 6 since 2009.

Seven members of Sail Canada 2023 Canadian Sailing Youth Squad newly announced and from British Columbia, Quebec, Ontario as well as from Nova Scotia were also at the weekend, including Noah Adler (Lower Prospect, N.S.-RNSYS), Victoria Coady (Coquitlam, B.C.-RVYC), Sullivan Nakatsu (Hammonds Plains, N.S.-RNSYS), Anna Parolin (Ottawa, ON-BYC), Anneka Siegel (Halifax, N.S.-AYC), Jacob Townsend (Hudson Heights, QC-HYC/CVDM) and Rory Walsh (Vancouver, B.C.-RVYC).

Local sailors from the St. Margaret’s Sailing Club (SMSC) Jill Stover, Claire Daley and Catherine Kozouosek alsdo took advantage of this opportunity, as well as others from Nova Scotia Reilly Nakatsu (RNSYS), Mattea Nakatsu (BBYC), Simon Blanchard (BBYC), Baruch Saffer (RNSYC/RCYC) and Hannah Winters (BBYC).

The camp and regatta were great opportunities of learning for athletes not part of the CST and CSDS as a select number of them works with a coach alongside the CST and CSDS during some drills. At the end of the day, all participants come together for debriefings and as much of the on-water sessions as possible. These camps will then leave athletes with an appreciation for the level and standard of professionalism to which CST & CSDS are held.

Congratulations to the different winners of the 2023 Spring Fling Regatta: Mattea Nakatsu (ILCA 4) and Ryan Anderson (ILCA 6).
