Toronto International Boat Show cancelled in person; going virtual for 2022
On Thursday evening, the Toronto International Boat Show (TIBS) has announced that the annual event, cancelled as an in-person show last year but scheduled to be held in-person this January, is again going virtual for 2022.

Eight Bells: Canadian Offshore Sailor Jim Plaxton
Jim Plaxton, who passed away peacefully on September 26th in London, Ontario, at the age of 83. The youngest son of 10 Plaxton children in the Rosedale neighbourhood in Toronto, Jim was a navy man, a pilot, an engineer, a sailor, a scholar as well as a very successful entrepreneur and businessman, and he was highly respected by his peers and business associates.

Southern Yacht Club Wins Rolex NYYC Invitational; RCYC 6th, RVYC 12th
The Canadian teams were up against very tough competition as, for the second time in three editions, Southern Yacht Club (New Orleans) won the ‘most prestigious trophy in Corinthian sailing’, the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup.

Chester NS sisters score bronze at 49er FX European Championships
Canadian sailors Antonia and Georgia Lewin-LaFrance from Chester NS won the bronze medal at the 2021 49er FX European Championships held in Thessaloniki, Greece. Thirty-seven boats competed; the Lewin-LaFrance team was the only non-Europeans.

Racing: Kneulman wins Etchells Canadians
The International Etchells Class held its 2021 Canadian Championships, the first Championship since 2019, at Hudson YC. Oakville Yacht Squadron along with Regatta Chair and Fleet 1 representative, Michael Hasko, hosted this event with 13 boats registered from Oakville, Toronto and Montreal.

Rebel wins Bluenose Maritime Championship
The history of the Bluenose Class sloop begins in 1946 when naval architect William J. Roué designed the wooden one design for a group of sailors from the Armdale Yacht Club. The first Bluenose class sloops set sail in Nova Scotia water in the spring of 1946.

Earlier this month, Sail Canada announced the members of the 2021-2022 Canadian Sailing Team and Canadian Sailing Development Squad. Nova Scotia 2022: 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Sailing Championships
Nova Scotia will host a 400-strong field of the world’s best sailors from over 35 countries when the World Championships for three Olympic classes, the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17, will be held August 31 – September 5, 2022. Taking place in Canada for the first time in its history, the competition will be held on St. Margaret’s Bay during the six-day event.

Racing: Marblehead to Halifax Canceled; Alternative races planned.
The Biennial Marblehead to Halifax ocean race has been cancelled for this summer – the victim of Covid-19. Organizers at the co-sponsoring Boston Yacht Club and Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron made the decision last week unable to get clarity about when the U.S./Canadian border might reopen.

Meet our Olympians: Nikola Girke – RS:X
West Vancouver’s Nikola Girke is the first Canadian sailor to ever compete in three different boat classes at the Olympic Games. After debuting in the 470 (two-handed dinghy) at Athens 2004 with skipper Jen Provan, she switched to the RS:X (windsurfer) in 2005, qualifying for Beijing 2008 and London 2012.
