Canada Dumped from SailGP Sched

Everyone was slightly nervous, but with the 2024-25 SailGP Schedule now announced, the disappointment will be tangible and enormous. Halifax is NOT on the Season Calendar.

Is it an omission, is it a typo?  Can nobody not wearing red understand that Halifax was the best event ever for the sport.

But there it is in print – I have marked the spot where you would expect to see the Halifax GP. But nada:

On the optimistic side, there appears to be some initiatives to schedule a Halifax event in 2026. There is precedent – Bermuda has skipped years but continues to host. Let’s hope.

But what does this news mean for the Canadian Team, if anything?  Here’s the most recent official newsletter information containing this quote from Russell Coutts.  “There’s one team that’s going to have to leave the league. Right now, the teams that have been notified are Canada, France and Spain.” 

The reply from CAN SailGP driver Phil Robertson, “I’ve got a lot of optimism about what’s happening in the background commercially. There are some good things going on and for sure this team needs to stay in this league,” said Robertson. 

“Everyone loves to talk it up, and in reality, I don’t think many of these teams have many leads. We have a fish on the hook and yeah, it’s real.” 

So, we shall see.
