Team Canada Trains for America’s Cup Regatta in Barcelona

Training in the 69F, a one-design, full foiling, full carbon monohull for crews

Following their summer training on Lake Garda—which included competing in 69F at the inaugural Women’s 69F Gold Cup—the focus of Team Canada’s America’s Cup training program has moved to Spain. As the countdown to the October 2024 America’s Cup regatta gains momentum, the Canadian team has set up base in Barcelona, the city that hosts the upcoming America’s Cup.

The simulator

The Canadian athletes have been balancing their time between the AC40 Simulator and foiling in Moths. This approach aims to fine-tune foiling skills and develop strategies that the sailors can transfer to the AC40 monohull they’ll be racing in both the Youth and Women’s America’s Cup regattas in 2024.

The time on the AC40 Sim has been invaluable for the team. It offers the sailors the opportunity to immerse themselves in a digital world of competitive sailing and enhance their decision-making abilities, tactical awareness, and teamwork. Team Canada currently holds the second-fastest time trial in the simulator, trailing Team NZL by just one second, setting the stage for an exciting showdown next year!

Women and Youth teams hike in Garda

The process of forming the final Team Canada lineup is well underway, with sailors from across the country invited to trials this month and coming up in early December for both the Youth and Women’s teams. While the AC40 is raced by four sailors, selected team members will include shore crew, data analysts, and reserve sailors. The selection process is rigorous, aiming to assemble a squad that not only embodies the Canadian spirit but also has the potential to bring home the prestigious America’s Cup.
