Regatta Preview: Kingston’s CORK for 2022 – a Packed Season

CORK, the Canadian Olympic training Regatta Kingston, is Canada’s largest annual sailing regatta. CORK was established in 1969 by a group of enthusiastic sailors who knew that Kingston was an ideal location for large international sailing regattas. CORK’s headquarters is at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, site of the 1976 Montreal Olympic sailing events.

This year, CORK is excited to host a full events schedule with regattas starting in June and running through to the end of September. The NORs are posted, and registration is open!  

Kingston is excited to welcome back international competitors with the first event of the season, the International Laser Class Association North American Championships June 30-July 4. 

The next event features the skiffs running July 21-24, the CORK Olympic Classes Regatta and Sail Canada Senior Championships for the 49er and 49er FX and the 29er Canadian Championships. 

The youngest competitors will be the first to compete in the August annual event series starting with the Optimist Team Racing Event. CORK International Optimist Regatta (August 4-7) will see the top youth in the championship fleet and the beginners try their first regatta sailing in the Green fleet.

The largest event of the summer is up next, CORK International and the Sail Canada Youth Championships is divided in two starting with the 29ers competing August 4-7 and the ILCA 4, 6, Club 420, International 420s competing from August 8-12. The CORK Olympic Classes Regatta and the Sail Canada Senior Championships (August 13-16) has the elite ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 athletes competing for the national title. 

The IKA Formula Kites and the Open foiling Kiteboards are set to compete out of Lake Ontario Park, Elevator Bay from August 18-21. The annual CORK Fall Regattas run from September 16-18 and September 23-25. 

Watch the racing all along Kingston’s waterfront; the Gord Edgar Downie Pier at Breakwater Park is an excellent viewing spot. Full dates and event details can be found at www.cork.org.
